In June 2015, the Dutch Association of Paediatrics expressed itself in favour of a rather controversial change in the law. According to the Association, children who are terminally ill and suffer unbearably should be accorded the right to die. To date, Belgium is the only country in the world where a child, unhampered by age restrictions – in exceptional situations and under very strict conditions – can be allowed the option of active life-ending treatment.
In this article the right to die is discussed from a children’s rights perspective.
